22 Things I learned by 22

In a shy of a month I’ll be leaving the comforts of being a 22 year-old and will be a fully pledged 23 year-old young adult. In my 22 years of existence, here are 22 things I have learned in dealing with life:

  1. Learn to say “no” without explaining yourself.
  2. There will always be people who don’t know how to tame their tongue. You must choose whether to respond or to not be moved by it.
  1. Make frequent plans with anyone you’d regret not seeing more of if they died tomorrow. Your family, your friends – anyone you love.
  2. Always forgive. But don’t be afraid to stop spending time with people who consistently hurt you.
  3. Eat a meal before a night of drinking if you don’t want to become best friends with the toilet the next morning.
  4. Tell people all the nice things you think about them. Too often we forget to say these things out loud.
  5. Be as beautiful as you can be everyday – in your words, the way you carry yourself and with everything in general
  6. Look at yourself in the mirror and imagine what 80-year-old you would say about how beautiful you look now.
  7. Eat dessert but not too much.
  8. Don’t be afraid to be the bigger person.
  9. Make the grand gesture, or even small gestures that comes from the heart.
  10. Don’t buy clothes that currently fit you, buy clothes that will leave room for you when you bet bigger unexpectedly. If you become smaller, it’s still okay to look at.
  11. If you always feel worse about yourself after spending time with someone, stop spending time with them.
  12. Pay attention to how your friends behave when you achieve success. The real ones will celebrate your successes with you and share in your failures.
  13. Learn how to do handy things, like fix toilets and change lightbulbs by yourself. Being self-sufficient is not gender specific.
  14. Smile at anyone who is serving you, be polite, and tip well.
  15. Do not give any one person the power to destroy you.
  16. Never stop learning.
  17. Read, read, read.
  18. Be confident in everything you do, remember you are loved.
  19. Don’t wait to wear things when you reach a certain weight. You can wear whatever style you like now. Right now.
  20. Allow yourself to look silly, whether on purpose or by accident. Life isn’t a beauty pageant.
